29 27 Gilbert trained as a teacher in Ireland; he came to NB about 1834, settled at Malden, Westmorland Co., and married Maria Dobson. They had 12 children. 79 p.8,9 1827: Gilbert Wall, who had been teaching school in Albert County, attracted by the Irish settlement (at Melrose NB), joined their numbers and took up a farm. He married outside the Church. Soon afterwards he was joined by three brothers, John, Lancelot and Richard, and one sister, Mrs. Heffernan. Gilbert's name appears as a Custom official under the Government in 1836. Although he practically abondoned the Communion of the Catholic Church, he was still retained as a teacher by the people, who recognized his extraordinary talents as an instructor.
